Alexis L.Leroy, CEO of ALLCOT, presented at COP21 in Paris on the subject of sustainability in sports. As an expert in climate finance and sports sustainability, Mr. Leroy illustrated the correlation between the power of sports to go beyond energy efficiency and the community-level benefits it can deliver to communities in developing regions.
He spoke about the pioneering initiative of Spanish La Liga football club Getafe FC. Getafe signed a landmark 5 year agreement with ALLCOT in June 2014 committing it to becoming one of the leading environmental and socially sustainable firsttier clubs in Europe. Through this agreement, Getafe has targeted a 20% reduction in energy, emissions, water and wasteby 2019. TheClub’s fans choose to offset its greenhouse gas emissions with an exemplary protected forestry project in theBrazilian Amazon.
The presentation was organized by the Green Sports Alliance, which leverages the cultural and market influence of sports to promote healthy, sustainable communities where we live and play. They do so by inspiring sports leagues, teams, venues, their partners and millions of fans to embrace renewable energy, healthy food, recycling, water efficiency, species preservation, safer chemicals and other environmentally preferable practices. Alliance members represent more than 300 sports teams and venues from 20 different sports leagues and 14 countries.
